EPW - Cartier, Mystery Watch, circa 1980, 50mm, heavy 18K gold OF original case, raised gold Roman numerals and indices set against a silver colored chapter, articulating pendant, hands are carried on clear disks which give the appearance from front and rear that they are floating, blued steel Breguet moon hands, SW-SS, nickel damascene mvt of unusual layout to fit design for rotating mystery dials, 19J cal 81003S, s#699078 on case back. Includes the original inner red Cartier presentation box. Gross weight of assembled watch 56.1 dwt (87.4 g). Made as part of two limited series in the 1970s and again in the 1990s, the mystery watches are highly sought after by Cartier collectors and this style was originally designed and produced in 1913 for an ornate desk clock. Cartier has made numerous iterations of thier famed mystery dial since, and apart from the two aforementioned series the only additional production of mystery pocket watches was during the 1930s.
